Nationally Renowned Guest Speakers:
Dr. Salah Ayari is currently an Associate Instructional Professor of Arabic and Arabic Studies and Director of Language Instruction at the Department of International Studies at Texas A&M University. He holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Minnesota. Prior to moving Texas A&M University in 2007, he taught Arabic for elementary and middle school students and served as a school principal for a total of 12 years. Dr. Ayari also provides training for K-12 Arabic language teachers in curriculum development and standards-based instruction through STARTALK and QFI funded workshops. He also conducts school site visits for Arabic program evaluation and improvement
Liz Matchett, California Language Teacher's Association 2016 Teacher of the Year, teaches at Henry M. Gunn High School in Palo Alto California. She is also the World Language Instructional Supervisor, with a department of 14 supportive colleagues who teach five languages. Her work exemplifies her certainty that all students can learn languages, world languages are part of the core curriculum, and every language matters. She spent part of her mid-career directing the Stanford World Language Program. This, coupled with her achievement of National Board Certification, solidified her belief that strong and continuous professional development is one of the keys to keeping teachers engaged and dedicated to the profession. Additionally, she works as a Cooperating Teacher for the Stanford Teacher Education Program because she believes that practicing teachers have the duty to support their emerging and new colleagues in order to ensure a dynamic and energetic cadre of educators who are prepared to nurture the next generation of global citizens.
Workshop 1: Designing Authentic Literacy Activities in the Arabic Classroom Presented By: Dr. Salah Ayari
Abstract: Participants in this session will learn the importance of reading and writing real-life texts for real-life purposes. Samples of authentic reading and writing tasks aimed at developing literacy skills in Arabic will be examined.
Workshop 2: Let's Get Real! Real-world Speaking and Listening Tasks for the Performance-based Classroom Presented by: Liz Matchett
Abstract: Our students must be prepared to understand and produce spoken Arabic. The only way we can prepare them for this real-world task is to to provide them with opportunities to practice listening and speaking to authentic sources. We will explore the theory behind the methods, experience some speaking and listening tasks used in a Spanish classroom, and have time to begin to adapt the tasks for Arabic.
